Lecture Series (FT 10): "Farewell to Secularization?", beginning 5. Octobre 2010

In 1959, the well-known political sociologist C. Wright Mills predicted, that religion would significantly lose influence and importance in most spheres of social life, except in private or indiviual segments. It was a sociological commonplace to assume that religion would lose its former hegemonial position. But in the early 1990s, after the influences of the religious revitalising movement in Latin America and the islamic revolution in Iran started to spread their influence, this paradigm was continously questioned. Do we therefore have to bid farewell to secularization as we knew it? We have invited four leading scholars to critically analyse the paradigm of secularization and, if necessary, to update it.
