Gastvortrag Prof. Helen Siu zu "Cultures and Markets", 24. November 2009

The lecture focuses on historical and contemporary movements of people, goods, cultural meanings and imaginaries that have connected an “Asian” region. The contemporary global crisis highlights the time-space compression of volatile finance flows that connect East Asia and the Indian Ocean to the Middle East and Africa. Helen Siu will examine the cultures of capital and market in the neoliberal and post-socialist worlds by using an ocean-based perspective to trace inter-connected, multi-ethnic commercial nodes.

Helen F. Siu is Professor of Anthropology at Yale University in New Haven. She has conducted historical and ethnographic fieldwork in South China and Hong Kong since the 1970s examining socialist and post-socialist transformations, the revival of market towns, community festivals and rituals, and lately, migration and vernacular modernity.
